The World According To Dave
Who Am I?

My name is David Demland and after I completed my Bachelor’s I found myself teaching music, a job that I enjoyed tremendously. While I was teaching I started dating someone that completed my life in many ways. Of course that lead to the thought of getting married. The problem was, that as a teacher, I was not making enough money to support a wife. So I started to look for a job in software development. In August of 1987 I got my first break in the software business.

Never in my life have I seen such a challenge in a job as I did in software development. Here I was programming in C and writing software that made computers do some of the most impressive things. Yet every day was different even though we were doing the same thing – programming. Each day brought new problems to solve and I loved it.

In April of 2000 I started as an Adjunct Professor at DeVry. I took the position at DeVry mostly because I missed teaching. What I have found is that my time at DeVry has turned into not just teaching but becoming a sort of recruiter for myself and other friends looking for good entry/junior people for various positions. This has become a great risk reducer at work by hiring people I already have seen work.

Today I still spend most of my time writing software and teaching part time at DeVry, but I have seen my personal goal turn into helping others to learn how to develop a great system first time. My goal of this site is to reach out to more than just the students I have and the co-workers I know. I hope that the information on this site can help you in your journey through the world of IT. Of course there are many ways to see the world, but as I say both in class and at work:
